TTRPG Blogosphere Update: Traveller, Geese, Accommodation (29 April 2025)

This week's blogosphere update offers a look at some interesting discussions and creations from around the TTRPG community: from character generation in Traveller and XP systems in DCC, to using video games like Untitled Goose Game as inspiration for tabletop adventures.
  • Grognardia: James Maliszewski delves into what makes character generation in Traveller so distinctive in his post, Traveller Distinctives: Character Generation. He reflects on the risk management, luck, and ambition inherent in the game's system, where characters can even die during creation, and why this ruthlessness is actually a key feature. In another post, Retrospective: Top Secret/S.I., James revisits TSR's Top Secret/S.I. espionage RPG, praising its cinematic approach and modular design while pondering why it never quite achieved the hoped-for success.

  • Kill It With Fire!: Claytonian is experimenting with Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) XP rewards in Tweaking DCC XP rewards. He explores how slightly multiplying XP rewards can impact leveling speed and discusses the challenges of awarding XP for non-combat encounters.

  • The Acorn Afloat: Jensan shares a heartwarming tale of introducing their daughter to RPGs using the Untitled Goose Game as inspiration in Untitled Goose Game as base for my daughter's game. The post includes a hand-drawn map, character sheet, and inventory, showcasing a creative and engaging way to spark a child's interest in tabletop roleplaying.

  • BASTIONLAND: Chris McDowall tackles the question of player accommodation in Bastion in Accommodation in Bastion. Offering a 6d6 table to determine the type, location, and characteristics of a character's home, adding depth and flavor to the game world.

  • Beyond the Bundle: The Bundle Operator announces the Coyote & Crow Bundle in Coyote & Crow – all-new through Fri 02 May. This bundle features the alternate-history RPG set in an uncolonized North America, offering ten titles, including the core rulebook and several standalone Stories, at a discounted price until May 2.
