The best TTRPG podcasts, blogs, and communities to follow

Are you a fan of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and looking for some inspiration, tips, or entertainment? Whether you are a seasoned player, a newbie, or a curious observer, there are plenty of online resources to help you enjoy this hobby. In this blog post, I will share with you some of the best TTRPG podcasts, blogs, and communities to follow. These are my personal favorites, but feel free to explore and discover your own!

Podcasts

Podcasts are a great way to listen to actual play sessions, learn from experienced game masters, or get immersed in the stories and characters of different TTRPG systems. Here are some of the podcasts I recommend:

- Critical Role: This is probably the most popular and well-known TTRPG podcast out there. It features a group of voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons, with amazing role-playing, humor, and drama. The podcast is based on their live-streamed show on Twitch and YouTube, which you can also watch if you prefer.

- The Adventure Zone: This is another hilarious and engaging podcast that follows the adventures of three brothers and their father playing various TTRPGs. They started with D&D, but have also explored other genres and systems like Monster of the Week, Amnesty, and Graduation.

- Not Another D&D Podcast: This is a comedy podcast that features four friends playing D&D in a homebrewed world full of twists, turns, and jokes. The podcast is hosted by Brian Murphy, Emily Axford, Jake Hurwitz, and Caldwell Tanner, who are all former CollegeHumor writers and performers.

- Fear of a Black Dragon: This is a podcast that reviews old-school and indie TTRPG modules from a critical and creative perspective. The hosts, Tom McGrenery and Jason Cordova, discuss the themes, mechanics, and aesthetics of each module, as well as how to adapt them for modern play. They also include segments on music, movies, books, and other media that inspire them.

Blogs

Blogs are a great way to read about different aspects of TTRPGs, such as game design, worldbuilding, character creation, or reviews. Here are some of the blogs I follow:

- Sly Flourish: This is a blog by Mike Shea, a veteran game master and author of several books on running D&D games. He offers practical and useful advice on how to prepare and run awesome sessions, as well as tips on using various tools and resources.

- Gnome Stew: This is a blog by a team of game masters who write about various topics related to TTRPGs. They cover things like game mechanics, adventure design, player management, improvisation, and more. They also have a podcast called Gnomecast.

- The Angry GM: This is a blog by an anonymous game master who writes in a sarcastic and humorous tone about his opinions and experiences with TTRPGs. He covers topics like game theory, rules interpretation, storytelling, and problem-solving.

Communities

Communities are a great way to connect with other TTRPG enthusiasts, ask questions, share ideas, or find groups to play with. Here are some of the communities I participate in:

- Reddit: Reddit has several subreddits dedicated to TTRPGs, such as r/rpg, r/DnD, r/dndnext, r/Pathfinder_RPG, r/Shadowrun, and more. You can find discussions, news, resources, art, memes, and more related to your favorite games.

- Discord: Discord is a chat app that allows you to join servers related to different topics and interests. There are many servers related to TTRPGs, such as the official Critical Role server, the RPG Talk server, the Dungeon Masters Guild server, and more. You can chat with other fans, get feedback, or join voice or video games.

- Meetup: Meetup is a website that helps you find local groups and events related to your hobbies and interests. You can search for TTRPG groups in your area and join them for in-person or online games. You can also create your own group and host your own events.

These are some of the best TTRPG podcasts, blogs, and communities to follow in my opinion. I hope you find them useful and enjoyable as I do. Happy gaming!
