Cosmic Ascension – Part 2: Game Rules

These are the fundamental rules of Cosmic Ascension: Embrace the cosmic forces, unleash your character's abilities, and embark on an extraordinary journey through the kaleidoscopic realms of the universe.

Dice Rolls

Cosmic Ascension utilizes various dice rolls to determine the outcomes of character actions and events in the game. The most common dice used are the 20-sided die (d20), 6-sided die (d6), and the Cosmic Dice (d4, d6, or d8, depending on the character's archetype). When called for, roll the specified dice and add or subtract any relevant modifiers to determine the result.

Ability Checks

When attempting a task that requires skill or effort, an ability check is made. To perform an ability check, roll a d20 and add the relevant ability score modifier. If the result is equal to or higher than the difficulty class (DC) set by the game master (GM), the character succeeds. Otherwise, they fail.

Struggle

Conflict in Cosmic Ascension occurs in rounds, with each round representing approximately six seconds of perceived in-game time, though in practice microseconds or millennia may pass. The order of combat is determined by initiative rolls, where each character rolls a d20 and adds their Entropy modifier. The highest result goes first, followed by descending order.

To determine whether an attack hits, roll a d20 and add the character's attack modifier. If the result is equal to or higher than the target's Harmony, the attack hits. On a hit, roll the appropriate damage dice for the weapon or ability used, adding any relevant modifiers.

Damage and Healing

When a character takes damage, subtract the damage value from their Cosmic Vitality. If their Cosmic Vitality reaches 0, the character is lost. Healing can be achieved through spells, abilities, or rest. Healing restores lost Cosmic Vitality.

Spellcasting

Characters with access to spells can cast them during their turn in combat or as part of their role-playing actions. Each spell has a specific level, range, and effect. To cast a spell, the character must expend the required Cosmic Essence and make a spellcasting roll. The DC is determined by the spell's level and the target's resistance, if applicable.

Leveling Up

Characters gain Cosmic Essence for overcoming challenges, completing quests, and achieving their objectives of enlightenment. Once a character accumulates a certain amount of Cosmic Essence, they level up. Leveling up increases their Ascension Level, which grants access to new cosmic abilities, increases their Cosmic Mastery, and may provide other benefits.

Role-playing and Decision-Making

Cosmic Ascension encourages immersive role-playing and decision-making. Players should embody their characters and make choices based on their character's personality, alignment, and goals. The game master will create a vibrant game world, non-player characters (NPCs), and engaging storylines to provide a rich and dynamic experience.

Game Master (GM) Role

The game master takes on the role of narrator, storyteller, and arbiter of rules. They create and guide the game world, control NPCs and adversaries, set the difficulty of tasks and challenges, and facilitate the overall gaming experience. The GM's role is to ensure fairness, maintain game balance, and foster an enjoyable adventure for all players.
